sermonette: As I Have Loved You

The Identifying Sign of the True Disciples is Their Love for Each Other
Clyde Finklea
Given 15-Jun-08; Sermon #887Bs; 19 minutes

Description: (hide)

Jesus' "new commandment" in John 13 to love one another as Christ has loved us is an added dimension of love that gives Christ's disciples a special identifying sign. Longsuffering and patience toward other people seem to exemplify God's attitude and behavior toward all of us, a trait David often exhibited. When we emulate this godly trait, we establish bonds of unity among us. As longsuffering and patience represent the passive side of love, kindness is the active side of love, also demonstrated by David. Both of these dimensions of love are commands and not suggestions. The sign identifying God's people is to love one another with Christ's standard of love—that we love one another as Christ has loved us.
