For as he thinketh within himself, so is he: Eat and drink, saith he to thee; But his heart is not with thee.

For as he thinks in his heart, so is he. As one who reckons, he says to you, eat and drink, yet his heart is not with you [but is grudging the cost].

Contemporary English Version
People like that take note of how much you eat. They say, "Take all you want!" But they don't mean it.

Darby English Version
For as he thinketh in his soul, so is he. Eat and drink! will he say unto thee; but his heart is not with thee.

Good News Bible
"Come on and have some more," he says, but he doesn't mean it. What he thinks is what he really is.

King James Version
For as he thinketh in his heart, so is he: Eat and drink, saith he to thee; but his heart is not with thee.

New American Standard Bible
For as he thinks within himself, so he is. He says to you, "Eat and drink! But his heart is not with you."

New International Version
for he is the kind of man
who is always thinking about the cost.
"Eat and drink," he says to you,
but his heart is not with you.

New King James Version
For as he thinks in his heart, so is he.
" Eat and drink!" he says to you,
But his heart is not with you.

N.A.S.B. in E-Prime
For as he thinks within himself, so he will probably prove himself. He says to you, "Eat and drink!" But his heart does not accommodate you.

Revised Standard Version
for he is like one who is inwardly reckoning. "Eat and drink!" he says to you; but his heart is not with you.

Young's Literal Translation
For as he hath thought in his soul, so `is' he, `Eat and drink,' saith he to thee, And his heart `is' not with thee.
