sermonette: Restoring Pure Speech

Reversing the Tower of Babel
Mike Ford
Given 11-Oct-03; Sermon #FT03-03s; 19 minutes

Description: (hide)

Zephaniah 3:9 describes the restoration of pure language. Restore means to bring back something that had been given earlier. The speech or language God gave Adam and Eve was undoubtedly pure. This language continued for nine generations. Before the break-up of language in Genesis 11, the world apparently had one language. The language became corrupted through foul, obscene, or filthy expressions. The days of the week come from pagan gods. The English language, with its multiple grammatical irregularities, needs abundant reform. Other currents which obfuscate and corrupt meaning are the political correctness and feminist movements, jargon, bureaucratize, and slang. Thankfully, the language barriers limit man's propensity for mischief. A universal language without God's spirit would be a deadly menace, but with God's Holy Spirit, a universal language would be beneficial.
