sermonette: The Temple of the Lord

Keeping the Right Perspective
David C. Grabbe
Given 23-Jul-05; Sermon #730s; 15 minutes

Description: (hide)

The scattering of God's people, including the recent diaspora of the former Worldwide Church of God, has historically been caused by idolatry. As Judah had placed greater trust in the temple before God, many placed greater trust in the church than in God. As Judah placed greater trust in the temple of the Lord than the Lord of the Temple, the recent scattering of the church of God stemmed from smugly assuming that "being in the church" would make questionable or marginal behaviors acceptable or condoned by God. If our confidence is in ourselves as the spiritual "temple of God, "we are practicing another form of idolatry. We cannot place our trust in anything (church, other people, or ourselves) other than God. If we do, we are practicing idolatry, inviting the disapproval of Almighty God.
