sermonette: Coveting

Sin Begins in the Heart
James Beaubelle
Given 20-Oct-05; Sermon #FT05-05s; 18 minutes

Description: (hide)

The tenth commandment seems to be the master control to violation of all the other commandments. Jesus teaches in Matthew 5 that all sin emanates in the hearts and defiles a person from the inside out. Idolatry begins as a mere thought impulse. Coveting is perhaps the most pervasive sin of the 21st century. Natural disasters bring out the true nature of what is in our hearts, either in the form of looting and stealing, or giving to and helping others. Achan brought a curse on all his brethren by the act of coveting. We may lawfully covet spiritual gifts. The breaking of the tenth commandment violates the mandate of the Second Great law—You shall love your neighbor or as yourself.
