Our forbears in ancient Jerusalem had assimilated the hopeless, cynical philosophy, "Eat, drink, and be merry, for tomorrow we die." There is also a positive context for the carpe diem ("seize the day") philosophy in Hebrews 10:19-25; we must urgently draw near to God while there is still time, holding fast to the faith we have been given. We have the opportunity to draw close to our High Priest, who has experienced what we have and can have sympathy for us. Likewise, in reciprocity we can reach out to others who are experiencing the same kind of trials as we have conquered. We need to pray, submit, and be faithful, for tomorrow we shall live.
