sermonette: God Breathes Where He Pleases

A Closer Look at John 3:8
David C. Grabbe
Given 14-Nov-09; Sermon #964s; 18 minutes

Description: (hide)

When Nicodemus asked about the concept of born again, the context does not deal with the resurrection, but the onset of a spiritual element within the flesh. The Spirit (referring to either God the Father or God the Son, not a third person of the Trinity) breathes wherever He breathes. In John 20:22 Jesus breathing on the disciples foreshadows receiving the Holy Spirit. As Adam received the breath of life, the disciples received the breath of spiritual life. God the Father chooses those upon whom He breathes, referring to God's election or calling, an event where He begins to change our minds. We have no understanding of where He came from, but know He works with our minds, giving us spiritual sight, having an insight into the mysteries of the kingdom. Everyone who hears God's call must respond, and continue to surrender to the perfect will of our Father.
