sermonette: The Law Of Jealousy

Standing Before God
Ted E. Bowling
Given 01-May-10; Sermon #990s; 17 minutes

Description: (hide)

The law of jealousies outlined in Numbers 5:11-31 describes the procedure to find out whether guilt from adultery has been present. If there had been adultery, the woman's belly would swell and her reproductive organs would dry up, but if there were no adultery, nothing would happen to her. With this law, God was able to guarantee the purity of the marriage relationships in Israel. Symbolically, this curse would transfer to the nation of Israel, who served as the wife of Almighty God. As God's church, we have entered into a marriage covenant with Christ. Unlike the hapless woman in Numbers, our sins have been absorbed by our Bridegroom Jesus Christ, who has consumed the bitter water for us. There is nothing hidden from God; there is no such thing as a secret sin before God. We come before God's throne with our head uncovered in humility, subject to God's judgment.
