sermonette: Rich Toward God

Beware of Covetousness
Martin G. Collins
Given 08-Oct-11; Sermon #1070s; 20 minutes

Description: (hide)

When we afflict our souls through fasting, we are not as apt to covet physical possessions, but instead find ourselves ruminating about the basic needs such as food and water. Our lives are not made full by abundant physical possessions, especially when we consider the transitory nature of our lives. Covetousness is an unquenchable thirst for physical things we think we need, but the lesson of the Day of Atonement is to hunger and thirst for righteousness, which will make us truly happy and complete. Spiritual satisfaction comes from the grace of God through Christ, a satisfaction that will last through eternity. Henry Thoreau suggests that, in this current physical life, the richest man is the one with the least expensive pleasures. The richest pleasures are spiritual, those accumulated through humbly serving others. If we place God first, God will always ensure that we have enough.
