sermonette: Clothing, Wineskins, and Wine

The Effects of the New Wine
David C. Grabbe
Given 01-Feb-14; Sermon #1196s; 18 minutes

Description: (hide)

The Parable of the Cloth and Wineskins in Luke 5:36-39 shows a culmination of a clash between old and new concepts of righteousness. Godly righteousness and self-generated human righteousness (as represented in Pharisaic and Hellenistic Judaism) are incompatible. Any humanly devised system of beliefs (including Protestantism and Catholicism) are also incompatible with God's system of beliefs. Without a brand new wineskin, the wine of the New Covenant would burst the seams. Only by abstaining from the old wine (symbolizing our desire for the world) can we cultivate a taste for the new wine, fermented through the sanctification process, a perfected vintage in new wineskins, symbolized by our conversion from carnal to spiritual—a thorough aging process.
