sermonette: The Small and Great Standing Before God

Martin G. Collins
Given 24-Oct-16; Sermon #FT16-08s-AM; 16 minutes

Description: (hide)

Many infamous monarchs had the title "the Great" affixed to their names. Historians have used questionable criteria when giving this designation to patently blatant tyrants. In contrast to this pretentious greatness is the genuine greatness inherent in God Almighty. Ironically, what the Gentiles call greatness—lust for power driven by an insatiable ego—is just the opposite of what God Almighty determines is great. The greatest, according to Jesus Christ, can be determined by the one who serves the most with an attitude of humility, generosity, and other-centeredness. Greatness cannot exist in the abstract, but must be demonstrated by selfless service to others. True greatness begins where self is lost and Christ is found. Jesus Christ is not limited by who we are; He is the one we emulate, enabling us to reflect the greatness of God the Father.
