The Corinthian congregation was taking the Passover in a flippant, disrespectful manner (I Corinthians 11:21-22). Yet it is a somber event, and we must examine ourselves before partaking in this meal, denoting Christ's sacrifice for us. God asks that we use the Passover to bring to remembrance His redemptive act, especially how our sins caused Christ to die in our stead. According to Steven Charnock, if we take the Passover flippantly, treating the body of Christ as an unworthy vessel, we have exceeded the sins of the Jews who crucified Him. The fact that God enables us to partake of the Passover with our Redeemer who wants to be at one with us should be humbling. Through the examples of Abraham (a type of the God the Father) and Isaac (a type of Jesus Christ), we begin to fathom the awesome depth of love expressed by John 3:16, "For God so loved the world, He sacrificed His only Son for you and me."
