sermonette: Overcoming the Leaven of Fear

David F. Maas
Given 15-Apr-20; Sermon #1539s-PM; 16 minutes

Description: (hide)

God's people should not allow their hearts to be troubled, thereby permitting a cringing cowardice to destroy them (John 1:14, Deuteronomy 38:7, Joshua 1:5-9. Exodus 14:10-14). The incidents narrated by these passages (i.e., the Crossing of the Red Sea and the Fall of Jericho) took place on the Last Day of Unleavened Bread. Like the ancients, God's people came out of the world with a high hand. Yet, from time to time they become spooked because of uncertainty, falling prey to the leavening of fear, which Pat Marrin describes as "the perfect metaphor to describe fear- a hidden enzyme, invisible, tasteless and undetectable until it pervades all the other ingredients and, when heated, rises and takes over. Small anxieties instill doubt, then fear, then paralysis, loss of courage and hope." Pat Higgins, in his Forerunner article, "The Sin of Fear," reminds us that Christ lists the cowardly and the unbelieving ahead of the murderers and adulterers whom His angels will cast into the Lake of Fire (Revelation 21:8). On the occasion of His last Passover, Christ promised us His Holy Spirit, which Paul emphasizes is not a Spirit of timidity but of power, love and self-control (II Timothy 1:7).
