sermonette: Fear of Death

Ronny H. Graham
Given 07-Oct-20; Sermon #FT20-05s; 24 minutes

Description: (hide)

The horrendous events of 2020 included the epic fires in Australia, threats of war with Iran, the Presidential impeachment trial, the coming of the coronavirus, the deadly protests from Antifa and BLM, as well as extraordinary natural disasters. Michael Crichton, in his book, State of Fear, explains that false fears are a modern plague always having a cause and that social control is best managed through fear. Fear of death originated with Adam and Eve's sin of consuming the fruit of the Tree of the Knowledge of Good and Evil. The fear of death entered their thinking and, in response, they attempted to hide from God. From that point on they did die spiritually, being cut off from God and driven from His presence. Satan's plan to destroy God's creation was now in motion. The narrative of David's slaying of the giant Goliath foreshadows Christ, Who, as the second Adam, defeated Satan in the flesh. Goliath (a type of Satan, accusing and taunting Israel) fell in the face of five smooth stones (perhaps symbolic of the five books of the Pentateuch) embedding themselves squarely in his forehead. The narrative of David's slaying Goliath anticipates Christ's freeing God's people from death.
