Reviewing the events of the battle between David and Goliath in I Samuel 17, we uncover the deeper meaning of their duel, how it demonstrates God's influence in the entire build-up of their battle, and how it applies to members today. Just like God influenced David's fight, He also influences our fight today. By the context of where the battle was set up and how everything led to a perfect conclusion, we can see the dual lessons of how God set up the map and gave the lessons necessary to David to defeat Goliath. We, too, need to practice the lessons God gives us, choosing a spiritual view as opposed to a physical view. Proving and holding fast the good things of God, no matter how difficult, are essential for a successful walk. David did not use the implements of King Saul because he had not tried them out. Instead, he used the sling—the method of fighting that he had cultivated throughout his life. We learn that the lessons and blessings are given to us for our own benefit, to refine, prove, and test us. As shown by the remarkably close proximity where both David and Goliath dwelled, it reveals that God had this conflict planned since the beginning of both their lives. God knows where our major conflicts are going to be, and He will give us the tools necessary to pass whatever comes our way.
