sermonette: Every Man Under His Fig Tree

Christian D. Hunter
Given 27-Jul-24; Sermon #1774s; 15 minutes

Description: (hide)

We associate fruit with things metaphorically, such as "fruit of righteousness" and "fruit of the womb," as well as the Millennial prospect of everyone dwelling under their own fig tree. The fig tree has multiple uses, including medicinal and dietary, such as fig wine. Uniquely, the fig flower stays intact through the full ripening of the fruit, not falling to the ground. Within the fig, there are many fruits in what seems to be a singular fruit (Galatians 5:22-23). Like the fig flower, God's saints do not fall if they are producing fruit. Jesus was compelled to curse a fig tree (Matthew 21:19) because it produced no fruit. The fig tree is unique among all creation, symbolizing God's spirit blooming and ripening inside of us, symbolizing a promise of Millennial peace when God rules exclusively over all the land. As God's called-out saints, we cannot let our fig tree wither by refusing to bear fruit.
