sermonette: What's In a Name?

Joseph B. Baity
Given 21-Jun-25; Sermon #1824s; 17 minutes

Description: (hide)

This deeply insightful message explores the profound personal, psychological, and spiritual significance of our names. Recent scientific studies have revealed how hearing our name triggers unique brain activity, enhancing our sense of identity, belonging, and value. As we draw from our cultural heritage and familial history, we understand how we see ourselves and how others connect with us. Certainly, biblical names are no trivial matter either. We learn that God named His creation, giving Adam the first naming task of identifying the animals, followed by naming His spouse Eve as the mother of all living human beings. God changed the names of Abram, Sarai, Jacob, and others to dignify their divine purpose. Jesus changed Simon's name to Peter and Saul's name to Paul, symbolizing their calling and transformation. God not only knows our names, but He formed, chose, and called us before our birth (Jeremiah 1:5, Isaiah 49:1, Psalm 139:16, Psalm 147:4). Revelation 3:12 assures all God's called-out ones that, if they overcome, they will receive a new name from Almighty God, inscribed on them for all eternity. Far from being accidental, our given names are sacred threads in God's intricate design, worthy of joy, reflection, and reverence.
