Ammon, Moab, and Mount Seir Defeated

1 It happened after this that the people of ^aMoab with the people of ^bAmmon, and others with them besides the ^cAmmonites, came to battle against Jehoshaphat.

2 Then some came and told Jehoshaphat, saying, “A great multitude is coming against you from beyond the sea, from¹ Syria; and they are ^ain Hazazon Tamar” (which is ^bEn Gedi).

3 And Jehoshaphat feared, and set himself to ^aseek the Lord, and ^bproclaimed a fast throughout all Judah.

4 So Judah gathered together to ask ^ahelp from the Lord; and from all the cities of Judah they came to seek the Lord.

The present Hebrew (and English) text mentions the Ammonites twice over. Hence, some adopt a different reading and translate "the children of Ammon, and with them certain of the Maonites," etc. Compare II Chronicles 20:10, note; Judges 10:12, note; I Chronicles 4:41, note.
