Satan Attacks Job’s Health

1 Again athere was a day when the sons of God came to present themselves before the Lord, and Satan came also among them to present himself before the Lord.  
2 And the Lord said to Satan, “From where do you come?” aSatan answered the Lord and said, “From going to and fro on the earth, and from walking back and forth on it.”  
3 Then the Lord said to Satan, “Have you considered My servant Job, that there is none like him on the earth, aa blameless and upright man, one who fears God and shuns evil? And still he bholds fast to his integrity, although you incited Me against him, cto destroy him without cause.”  
4 So Satan answered the Lord and said, “Skin for skin! Yes, all that a man has he will give for his life.
5 aBut stretch out Your hand now, and touch his bbone and his flesh, and he will surely1 curse You to Your face!”  
6 aAnd the Lord said to Satan, “Behold, he is in your hand, but spare his life.”  
7 So Satan went out from the presence of the Lord, and struck Job with painful boils afrom the sole of his foot to the crown of his head.  
8 And he took for himself a potsherd with which to scrape himself awhile he sat in the midst of the ashes.

Job 2:1

Again there was a day - How long this was after the former trial, we know not: probably one whole year, when, as the Targum intimates, it was the time of the annual atonement; which, if so, must have been at least one whole year after the former; and during which period the patience and resignation of Job had sufficient scope to show themselves. This appearance of the sons of God and Satan is to be understood metaphorically - there could be nothing real in it - but it is intended to instruct us in the doctrine of the existence of good and evil spirits; that Satan pursues man with implacable enmity, and that he can do no man hurt, either in his person or property, but by the especial permission of God; and that God gives him permission only when he purposes to overrule it for the greater manifestation of his own glory, and the greater good of his tempted followers.
