Amplified® Bible
They are gaunt with want and famine; they gnaw the dry {and} barren ground {or} flee into the wilderness, into the gloom of wasteness and desolation.

Contemporary English Version
They must claw the desert sand in the dark for something to satisfy their hunger.

Withered up through want and hunger, they flee into waste places long since desolate and desert:
