The Lord Reveals His Omnipotence to Job

1 Then the Lord answered Job ^aout of the whirlwind, and said:

2 “Who^a is this who darkens counsel
By ^bwords without knowledge?

3 ^aNow¹ prepare yourself like a man;
I will question you, and you shall answer Me.

4 “Where^a were you when I laid the foundations of the earth?
Tell Me, if you have understanding.

5 Who determined its measurements?
Surely you know!
Or who stretched the¹ line upon it?

this—Job.

counsel—impugning My divine wisdom in the providential arrangements of the universe. Such "words" (including those of the friends) rather obscure, than throw light on My ways. God is about to be Job's Vindicator, but must first bring him to a right state of mind for receiving relief.
