And devouring fire from His mouth;
Coals were kindled by it.

9 ^aHe bowed the heavens also, and came down
With darkness under His feet.

10 ^aAnd He rode upon a cherub, and flew;
^bHe flew upon the wings of the wind.

11 He made darkness His secret place;
^aHis canopy around Him was dark waters
And thick clouds of the skies.

12 ^aFrom the brightness before Him,
His thick clouds passed with hailstones and coals of fire.

cherub—angelic agents (compare Genesis 3:24), the figures of which were placed over the ark (I Samuel 4:4), representing God's dwelling; used here to enhance the majesty of the divine advent. Angels and winds may represent all rational and irrational agencies of God's providence (compare Psalms 104:3-4).

did fly—Rapidity of motion adds to the grandeur of the scene.
