Psalms 31:10
Compare all
8 And have not ashut me up into the hand of the enemy;
bYou have set my feet in a wide place.
9 Have mercy on me, O Lord, for I am in trouble;
aMy eye wastes away with grief,
Yes, my soul and my1 body!
10 For my life is spent with grief,
And my years with sighing;
My strength fails because of my iniquity,
And my bones waste away.
11 aI am a1 reproach among all my enemies,
But bespecially among my neighbors,
And am repulsive to my acquaintances;
cThose who see me outside flee from me.
12 aI am forgotten like a dead man, out of mind;
I am like a1 broken vessel.

Psalms 31:10

Though the effects ascribed to grief are not mere figures of speech—

spent . . . consumed—must be taken in the modified sense of wasted and decayed.

iniquity—or, suffering by it (see on Psalms 40:12).

Psalms 31:9-10

mine eye, etc.—denotes extreme weakness (compare Psalms 6:7).

grief—mingled sorrow and indignation (Psalms 6:7).

soul and . . . belly—the whole person.
