5 All those1 who were descendants of Jacob were aseventy persons (for Joseph was in Egypt already).  
6 And aJoseph died, all his brothers, and all that generation.  
7 aBut the children of Israel were fruitful and increased abundantly, multiplied and1 grew exceedingly mighty; and the land was filled with them.  
8 Now there arose a new king over Egypt, awho did not know Joseph.

Seventy - See Genesis 46:27. The object of the writer in this introductory statement is to give a complete list of the heads of separate families at the time of their settlement in Egypt. See the note at Numbers 26:5.
