3 ^aThe¹ pains of death surrounded me,
And the¹ pangs of Sheol laid hold of me;
I found trouble and sorrow.

4 Then I called upon the name of the Lord:
“O Lord, I implore You, deliver my soul!”

5 ^aGracious is the Lord, and ^brighteous;
Yes, our God is merciful.

6 The Lord preserves the simple;
I was brought low, and He saved me.

7 Return to your ^arest, O my soul,
For ^bthe Lord has dealt bountifully with you.

8 ^aFor You have delivered my soul from death,
My eyes from tears,
And my feet from falling.

9 I will walk before the Lord
^aIn the land of the living.

10 ^aI believed, therefore I spoke,
“I am greatly afflicted.”

Psalms 116:5-8

The relief which he asked is the result not of his merit, but of God's known pity and tenderness, which is acknowledged in assuring himself (his "soul," Psalms 11:1; Psalms 16:10) of rest and peace. All calamities [Psalms 116:8] are represented by death, tears, and falling of the feet (Psalms 56:13).
