Proverbs 7:21-27
So people often struggle to accept that friends and acquaintances may be leading them astray. Young people seek acceptance, so they tend to avoid confronting or criticizing a friend's wrong plans or actions, and they just go along. Many people are unaware of how their friend's actions might cause trouble.
While we should accept others, we also need to remain cautious about human behavior, and when we feel ourselves being subtly or strongly influenced, we must be especially careful. Despite all the external circumstances and agents that intrude into a person's mind and prompt them toward evil, they do not cause anyone to give in to temptation. They provide an opportunity for moral choice: choose this, not that.
So our heart, meaning our feelings of love and desire, largely determines how we live, since we always make time for what we enjoy. Solomon advises us to guard our hearts diligently, ensuring we focus on desires that lead us on the right path.
