American Standard Version
He that is surety for a stranger shall smart for it; But he that hateth suretyship is secure.

Amplified® Bible
He who becomes security for an outsider shall smart for it, but he who hates suretyship is secure [from its penalties].

Contemporary English Version
It's a dangerous thing to guarantee payment for someone's debts. Don't do it!

It goeth ill with him that is surety for another; but he that hateth suretyship is secure.
