Proverbs 16:1

1 The ^apreparations of the heart belong to man,
^bBut the answer of the tongue is from the Lord.

2 All the ways of a man are pure in his own ^aeyes,
But the Lord weighs the spirits.

3 ^aCommit¹ your works to the Lord,
And your thoughts will be established.

4 The ^aLord has made all for Himself,
^bYes, even the wicked for the day of¹ doom.

5 ^aEveryone proud in heart is an abomination to the Lord;
Though they join¹ forces, none will go unpunished.

Proverbs 16:1

The proverbs in Proverbs 16:1-7 have, more than any other group, an especially religious character impressed upon them. The name of Yahweh as Giver, Guide, Ruler, or Judge, meets us in each of them.

Proverbs 16:1

Better, The plans of the heart belong to man, but the utterance of the tongue is from Yahweh. Thoughts come and go, as it were, spontaneously; but true, well ordered speech is the gift of God. Compare Proverbs 16:9.
