Proverbs 27:19

17 As iron sharpens iron,
So a man sharpens the countenance of his friend.
18 aWhoever1 keeps the fig tree will eat its fruit;
So he who waits on his master will be honored. 
19 As in water face reflects face,
So a man’s heart reveals the man.
20 aHell1 and Destruction are never full;
So bthe eyes of man are never satisfied. 
21 aThe refining pot is for silver and the furnace for gold,
And a man is valued by what others say of him. 
22 aThough you grind a fool in a mortar with a pestle along with crushed grain,
Yet his foolishness will not depart from him.

Proverbs 27:19

As in water face answereth to face - All men' s hearts are pretty nearly alike; water is not more like to water, than one heart is to another. Or, as a man sees his face perfectly reflected by the water, when looking into it; so the wise and penetrating man sees generally what is in the heart of another by considering the general tenor of his words and actions.

"Surely, if each man saw another' s heart

There would be no commerce;

All would disperse,

And live apart."
