Isaiah 8:4
Compare all
2 And I will take for Myself faithful witnesses to record, aUriah the priest and Zechariah the son of Jeberechiah.”
3 Then I went to the prophetess, and she conceived and bore a son. Then the Lord said to me, “Call his name Maher-Shalal-Hash-Baz;
4 afor before the child shall have knowledge to cry ‘My father’ and ‘My mother,’ bthe riches of Damascus and the2 spoil of Samaria will be taken away before the king of Assyria.”
5 The Lord also spoke to me again, saying:
6 “Inasmuch as these people refused
The waters of aShiloah that flow softly,
And rejoice bin Rezin and in Remaliah’s son;
7 Now therefore, behold, the Lord brings up over them
The waters of1 the River, strong and mighty—
The king of Assyria and all his glory;
He will1 go up over all his channels
And go over all his banks.
8 He will1 pass through Judah,
He will overflow and pass over,
aHe will reach up to the neck;
And the stretching out of his wings
Will fill the breadth of Your land, O bImmanuel.
9 “Bea shattered, O you peoples, and be broken in pieces!
Give ear, all you from far countries.
Gird yourselves, but be broken in pieces;
Gird yourselves, but be broken in pieces.
10 aTake counsel together, but it will come to nothing;
Speak the word, bbut it will not stand,
cFor1 God is with us.”

Isaiah 8:4

For before ... - This must have occurred in a short time - probably before the expiration of three years. A child would usually learn to address his parents in that time. In fact, the event here predicted occurred in less than three years from the time when the prophecy was spoken; see the notes at Isaiah 7:16.

Before the king of Assyria - By the king, or by his conquests. By the spoil of Samaria here, is to be understood, not the plunder which should be carried away from the city, but from the kingdom of Samaria. In other places, the land is called by the name of the capital; compare II Kings 17:26; II Kings 23:19; Jeremiah 31:5. The city of Samaria was not plundered until eighteen years after the time mentioned here by the prophet; Isaiah 8:5-6. These verses introduce again what was predicted in Isaiah 7:17, following, respecting the invasion of the land by the king of Assyria. The cause of the invasion is specified, and the consequences are foretold.
