American Standard Version
But they held their peace, and answered him not a word; for the king's commandment was, saying, Answer him not.

Amplified® Bible
But they kept still and answered him not a word, for the king's [Hezekiah's] command was, Do not answer him.

Contemporary English Version
Eliakim, Shebna, and Joah had been warned by King Hezekiah not to answer the Assyrian commander. So they tore their clothes in sorrow and reported to Hezekiah everything the commander had said.

And they were silent, and answered him not a word; for the king's command was, saying, Answer him not.
