Exodus 13:14
Compare all
12 athat you shall set apart to the Lord all that open the womb, that is, every firstborn that comes from an animal which you have; the males shall be the Lord’s.
13 But aevery firstborn of a donkey you shall redeem with a lamb; and if you will not redeem it, then you shall break its neck. And all the firstborn of man among your sons byou shall redeem.
14 aSo it shall be, when your son asks you in time to come, saying, ‘What is this?’ that you shall say to him, b‘By strength of hand the Lord brought us out of Egypt, out of the house of bondage.
15 And it came to pass, when Pharaoh was stubborn about letting us go, that athe Lord killed all the firstborn in the land of Egypt, both the firstborn of man and the firstborn of beast. Therefore I sacrifice to the Lord all males that open the womb, but all the firstborn of my sons I redeem.’
16 It shall be as aa sign on your hand and as frontlets between your eyes, for by strength of hand the Lord brought us out of Egypt.”

The Wilderness Way

17 Then it came to pass, when Pharaoh had let the people go, that God did not lead them by way of the land of the Philistines, although that was near; for God said, “Lest perhaps the people achange their minds when they see war, and breturn to Egypt.”

Exodus 13:11-15

I think we can safely say that the price of buying the Israelites' freedom was the devastation of Egypt's land, and above all the killing of Egypt's firstborn. The redemption of the firstborn of Israel was to remind them of the high cost of their liberty. Those Egyptians, brethren, belonged to God just as surely as the Israelites, but God used them to pay for Israel's liberty! They died so Israel could be free, and that law was established to remind them that people had to die so they could be free. Freedom is not free. It is the most costly thing in the universe, and once that freedom is gained it is not to be given up on the cost of anything. It is too precious to relax and allow it to just go floating by the board, especially when we begin to realize that for our freedom the greatest price in all the universe had to be paid.

Exodus 13:11-16

This is having to do with the redeeming of the firstborn. And if you did not redeem it, you broke its neck. Of course, all firstborn Israelites had to be redeemed, but the animals, if they could not redeem them, had their necks broken.

It was this dedication, and redemption of the firstborn that was the sign. Not the little scrolls in the boxes with the leather straps.
