Truly in vain is `the help that is looked for' from the hills, the tumult on the mountains: truly in Jehovah our God is the salvation of Israel.

Truly in vain is the hope of salvation from the hills and from the tumult {and} noisy throng on the mountains; truly in {and} with the Lord our God rests the salvation of Israel.

Contemporary English Version
On hilltops, we worshiped idols and made loud noises, but it was all for nothing-- only you can save us.

Truly in vain [is salvation looked for] from the hills, [and] the multitude of mountains; truly in Jehovah our God is the salvation of Israel.
