Jeremiah 5:6

4 Therefore I said, “Surely these are poor.
They are foolish;
For ^athey do not know the way of the Lord,
The judgment of their God.

5 I will go to the great men and speak to them,
For ^athey have known the way of the Lord,
The judgment of their God.”
But these have altogether ^bbroken the yoke
And burst the bonds.

6 Therefore ^aa lion from the forest shall slay them,
^bA wolf of the deserts shall destroy them;
^cA leopard will watch over their cities.
Everyone who goes out from there shall be torn in pieces,
Because their transgressions are many;
Their backslidings have increased.

7 “How shall I pardon you for this?
Your children have forsaken Me
And ^asworn by those ^bthat are not gods.
^cWhen I had fed them to the full,
Then they committed adultery
And assembled themselves by troops in the harlots’ houses.

8 ^aThey were like well-fed lusty stallions;
Every one neighed after his neighbor’s wife.

A lion - Nebuchadnezzar and the Chaldean army are here pointed at under the metaphor of beasts of prey of three kinds; compared to a lion, which denotes his great power, courage, and pride. A wolf - For their greediness and unsatiableness. A leopard - The Chaldean army is compared to a leopard, not for its speed only, but for its vigilancy and subtilty.
