Exodus 16:4
Excerpted from: The Fourth Commandment (Part 5)

A test is coming. Of course, I think you understand the context here. The test was the keeping of the Sabbath. What He shows us within the context of this is that the Sabbath should be prepared for.

Wait a minute. God said that He was going to give Israel a test. The test had to do with keeping the Commandment—the Fourth Commandment, the Sabbath Commandment. He wanted to see whether they were going to obey Him. He then commanded them to prepare for it, so that they could pass the test!

Does God mean what He says, or doesn't He? What He is telling me here is that He is serious enough about our keeping of the Sabbath that He added an additional commandment to make sure that we are prepared—so that we could keep it, and so that we would pass the test. So the test is not whether we know about the Sabbath. The test is how we keep the Sabbath. And in order to keep the Sabbath, He is saying that it has to be prepared for.

Whether or not we will live by God's Word (and not our own ideas) depends upon our faith - because, in reality, the test is one of our faith. That is, whether we believe what God says. Remember that I said that, if we are depending only upon our eyes (only upon our senses), we are quite limited. There are things that we can't see, things that we can't hear, or whatever, that are very important to God. By appearance, the Sabbath is no different from any other day of the week. So everybody is confronted by a test of faith in keeping it properly, and preparation has to do with keeping it properly.

Exodus 16:1-7
Excerpted from: Under Attack By the Amalekites

We see here again that those who had been delivered from God by the mightiest of hands, His hand, and He had provided for them in the wilderness, again were complaining into the second month. We also see in God's mercy that He granted their requests for what they physically desired, but He also began to give them the most important lesson that they would have with them day by day, week by week for nearly 40 years. As it says in verse chapter 16, verse 4, the Lord said to Moses, "Behold, I will rain bread from heaven for you. And the people shall go out and gather a certain quota every day, that I may test them, whether they will walk in My law or not."

Exodus 16:4
Excerpted from: Holy Ground

Make no mistake, the Sabbath is a test commandment for us. It is interesting how the world worships on Sunday, the Muslims worship on Friday, when the Bible, the Holy Scriptures, call for a Saturday or Sabbath observance. God in His wisdom made the Sabbath a test commandment for us. God tested ancient Israel out in the wilderness. Back in Exodus 16:4, God said He would test them to see if they would follow His instructions, to know if they would walk in His law.

Exodus 16:4
Excerpted from: Passover (Part 3)

What law? The Sabbath law! And He is going to do it with the manna. He is going to do a couple of things at once here. (1) He is going to bless His people with food; (2) He is going to give them a test; and (3) He is going to reveal to them which day is His Sabbath. Make it abundantly clear (as we will see) at the beginning and at the end of the week. Not just the end of the week. Everybody's real familiar with the one at the end of the week.

Exodus 16:4
Excerpted from: God's Faithfulness and Hope

So, last time it was water, this time it is food.

Do you know what God set up here? A forty-year test all around this idea of food. And they failed it. They failed it within the first week again! But, He continued it for forty long years to give them a daily reminder of His providence for them; His faithfulness to the covenant that He had made with them.

Exodus 16:3-4
Excerpted from: The Laborers: Matthew 20:1-16

You mean to tell me they forgot the pain already? And now, they were entitled to more?
