Exodus 16:22-30
Excerpted from: Pentecost and Time

So here is the first extended passage about the Sabbath since Genesis 2. God said He rested on the seventh day, He made the Sabbath. But in between there and here, there is precious little about the Sabbath and what Exodus 16 does is show us that the Israelites, as was their want, they were out of sync with God on this very fundamental point. They were treating the Sabbath like an ordinary day, and their treating of the Sabbath as an ordinary day receives God's immediate and angry censure. "How long do you refuse to keep My commandments and laws?" It was like God thundered out of the cloud. "Look, there are people trying to pick up manna that's not even there. Didn't you hear what I said? If you want to be in sync with Me, don't do that on the Sabbath!"

Exodus 16:22-23
Excerpted from: The Fourth Commandment (Part 1)

The inference here is obvious. This instruction was given by Moses so that they would not work on the Sabbath day. What I am drawing our attention to here is this: The first Commandment that God specifically revealed to His people after coming out of Egypt was the Sabbath—the Commandment most important for keeping people free. And IF people miss their appointment because they have something else going, THEN they are missing the opportunity to remain free—squandering the time that God has given to mankind so that they can be in His Kingdom. The Sabbath is a wonderful gift that He has given to us.

Exodus 16:22-23
Excerpted from: Re-education (Part 1)

This was a slight change from what He commanded before because they had understood that if they kept it overnight, that when they got up in the morning, it would stink and have worms. And so, here on Friday, the preparation day, Moses had to tell them that this is an exception. You gather twice as much as normal, and leave over half for the next day, and it will not stink this time, only because it is the Sabbath. God will perform this miracle every Sabbath.
