Lamentations 3:40
Compare all
38 Is it not from the mouth of the Most High
That awoe and well-being proceed?
39 aWhy should a living man1 complain,
bA man for the punishment of his sins?
40 Let us search out and examine our ways,
And turn back to the Lord;
41 aLet us lift our hearts and hands
To God in heaven.
42 aWe have transgressed and rebelled;
You have not pardoned.
43 You have covered Yourself with anger
And pursued us;
You have slain and not pitied.
44 You have covered Yourself with a cloud,
That prayer should not pass through.
45 You have made us an aoffscouring and refuse
In the midst of the peoples.
46 aAll our enemies
Have opened their mouths against us.
47 aFear and a snare have come upon us,
bDesolation and destruction.
48 aMy eyes overflow with rivers of water
For the destruction of the daughter of my people.
49 aMy eyes flow and do not cease,
Without interruption,
50 Till the Lord from heaven
aLooks down and sees.
51 My eyes bring suffering to my soul
Because of all the daughters of my city.
52 My enemies awithout cause
Hunted me down like a bird.

Lamentations 3:40-42

The prophet urges men to search out their faults and amend them.

Lamentations 3:40

And turn again to the Lord - Or, "and return to Yahweh." The prep. (to) in the Hebrew implies not half way, but the whole.

Lamentations 3:41

Literally, "Let us lift up our heart unto our hands unto God in heaven;" as if the heart first lifted up the hands, and then with them mounted up in prayer to God. In real prayer the outward expression is caused by the emotion stirring within.
