God instructed the Israelites to break down the idolatrous images of the pagans—not break down, fight, or kill the people. God said He would drive them out.

God said He, not an Israelite army, would put fear in their enemies and drive them out, but not all at once—little by little. God is very careful in His care for His people. He does it carefully and systematically and with great organization. He knew that if the animals were allowed to proliferate without human beings being in the area that there would be a danger to the Israelites, in the form of anything from bobcat type of animals to lions and such.

Again, here are more outstanding promises telling them the manner in which He will work to enable them to take over the land. He showed here that their progress would be incremental for practical reasons; that is, lest they get in over their heads into a circumstance greater than they could handle. He then tells them generally how large their inheritance will be, and then finishes with a second warning against idolatry.

These are stiff warnings, and at the same time, wonderful promises were given, one of which was that they did not have to do everything in chasing these people out of the land immediately, but they still had to discipline themselves to stick with the plan, and God would be with them all the entire way.
