Excerpted from: Faith (Part Two)Terrible times, God says, are coming and the proud are going to be caught in that time. If you want to live—if you want to be spared, if you want to be saved, if you want to be able to witness these things and live beyond it, and I am thinking here of eternal life—then you are going to live by your faith, and as we just saw, wait for it. It is going to require perseverance. It is going to require endurance.
It is so interesting that this word translated here "faith" is not the normal Hebrew word for faith. This word means more like our English word "fairness," that the just shall live by his fairness. He shall live by his stability. He shall live by his certainty. He shall live by his reliability. He shall live by his personal character. He shall live by his integrity. Because the word normally would be translated "faithfulness"—the just shall live by his faithfulness.
A person is faithful to God only because he trusts Him and therefore, in order to help us to understand, the translators decided to inject the word there, or to insert the word "faith" because faithfulness on the part of a human being ultimately rests on his trust in God. If a person is going to be faithful, it is because he believes what God says and he is motivated then to have a genuine commitment to righteousness. Thus, the translation "faith."
