Zechariah 2:4

2 So I said, “Where are you going?” And he said to me, ^a“To measure Jerusalem, to see what is its width and what is its length.”

3 And there was the angel who talked with me, going out; and another angel was coming out to meet him,

4 who said to him, “Run, speak to this young man, saying: ^a‘Jerusalem shall be inhabited as towns without walls, because of the multitude of men and livestock in it.

5 For I,’ says the Lord, ‘will be ^aa wall of fire all around her, ^band I will be the glory in her midst.’ ”

6 “Up, up! Flee ^afrom the land of the north,” says the Lord; “for I have ^bspread you abroad like the four winds of heaven,” says the Lord.

7 “Up, Zion! ^aEscape, you who dwell with the daughter of Babylon.”

8 For thus says the Lord of hosts: “He sent Me after glory, to the nations which plunder you; for he who ^atouches you touches the apple of His eye.

9 For surely I will ^ashake My hand against them, and they shall become¹ spoil for their servants. Then ^byou will know that the Lord of hosts has sent Me.

10 ^a“Sing and rejoice, O daughter of Zion! For behold, I am coming and I ^bwill dwell in your midst,” says the Lord.

11 ^a“Many nations shall be joined to the Lord ^bin that day, and they shall become ^cMy people. And I will dwell in your midst. Then ^dyou will know that the Lord of hosts has sent Me to you.

12 And the Lord will ^atake possession of Judah as His inheritance in the Holy Land, and will again choose Jerusalem.

13 ^aBe silent, all flesh, before the Lord, for He is aroused ^bfrom His holy habitation!”

this young man—So Zechariah is called as being still a youth when prophetically inspired [GROTIUS]. Or, he is so called in respect to his ministry or service (compare Numbers 11:27; Joshua 1:1) [VATABLUS]. Naturally the "angel that talked with" Zechariah is desired to "speak to" him the further communications to be made from the Divine Being.

towns without walls for the multitude . . . Cattle—So many shall be its inhabitants that all could not be contained within the walls, but shall spread out in the open country around (Esther 9:19); and so secure shall they be as not to need to shelter themselves and their cattle behind walls. So hereafter Judea is to be "the land of unwalled villages" (Ezekiel 38:11). Spiritually, now the Church has extended herself beyond the walls (Ephesians 2:14-15) of Mosaic ordinances and has spread from cities to country villages, whose inhabitants gave their Latin name (pagani) to pagans, as being the last in parting with heathenism.
