16 “Moreover, awhen you fast, do not be like the1 hypocrites, with a sad countenance. For they disfigure their faces that they may appear to men to be fasting. Assuredly, I say to you, they have their reward.  
17 But you, when you fast, aanoint your head and wash your face,  
18 so that you do not appear to men to be fasting, but to your Father who is in the secret place; and your Father who sees in secret will reward you1 openly.

19 a“Do not lay up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy and where thieves break in and steal;

Matthew 6:16-18

So those acts should not be self-centered, but God-centered, done not to make us look good but to make God look good, to glorify God.

The reward God promises is not material and is not given to those seeking it. Doing something only for ourselves is not a loving sacrifice, and with our next good deed, ask: "Would I still do this if no one were ever to know I did it?" In other words, do not toot your own horn.
