There is a misperception in much of what passes in this world as "Christianity," and here in Matthew 7 Jesus admonishes by saying:

Do not ever let anybody convince you that Christianity is not a religion of works. Christianity is hard work! That is what your Savior said. It is difficult! It is hard work. And it is hard work because its direction and purpose run counter to human nature. Confusion about "works" enters the picture when people wrongly try to associate "works" with "salvation." We are saved by grace through faith. There is no argument with that biblical fact. Works enter the picture as a necessary part of the process of growth within God's purpose—not salvation. Salvation is, in a major sense, an already finished work of Jesus Christ. That is why so many statements in the Bible in regard to salvation are written in the past tense. "We are saved ... [past tense]".

I think we need to examine, just briefly, what Jesus was talking about here in terms of what the false minister would not preach. He does not explicitly say what their teaching will be. But brethren, look where this was placed by Matthew and I have to believe God inspired Matthew to remember what Jesus' words were right after He uttered that thing in verse 12—which is the golden rule. Verse 13 admonishes us to:

That leads right into the teaching about false prophets. To me, reading that right in its context, I would have to say that what Jesus said about false ministers demands that the false ministers will neither acknowledge or teach the narrow way that leads to life; the narrow way that is going to lead to persecution. Instead they will do just what God shows the Old Testament false prophets did and teach "peace, peace"—the smooth, easy, and broad way.

This verse agrees with Galatians 5:16-18. Jesus is affirming that the way to life is difficult and it is difficult because human nature is applying a very strong pressure on the person to go in the direction of the old way and human nature is working on a person's mind to deny responsibility, and human nature is discouraging because it is an ever-present pressure that a person has to deal with. Now here is a truth: All of us have character disorders, or we would not be here. Christianity is difficult because of this; that is, because of these character disorders.

The reward of the firstfruits of the Kingdom is so great, because it is such a narrow and difficult way for those who follow God's call, and are placed in God's church by God. Following Christ is a lifetime commitment.
