Excerpted from: Deuteronomy and IdolatryI am going to suggest something to you. We all know from other places that Moses did have a temper that flared up every once in a while. What I am suggesting to you is that his breaking of the stone may have been a deliberate act, and not something he did in an emotional rage. Because the people had done this and had done this so quickly, his breaking of the stone may have symbolized, as far as Moses was concerned, that the covenant was already broken, and so he broke the terms of the covenant to illustrate that, showing the very serious consequence of idolatry, and especially serious, because it was just so close to them pledging their love to God.

This is a man that was prepared for a long time, but he was still not finished. In verse 7, God says, “Get down! For your people, whom you brought out of the land of Egypt have corrupted themselves.” Knowing Moses as well as He did, He knew what would happen. He lost his temper, as he had forty years before when he took it upon himself to kill the Egyptian for beating a Hebrew. Only this time in a fit of anger he smashed the two tablets that were the work of God, with the writing that was written by God, as we are reminded in verse 16.

Excerpted from: Radiating the Glory of GodNotice the hints that God gives us here that Moses' thinking was not yet quite in line with His. In verse 7, God says "get thee down for your people which you brought out of the land of Egypt, have corrupted themselves" and knowing Moses as well as He did, He knew what he would do as recorded in verse 19, as he presumptuously lost his temper, and cast the word of God on the ground. It reminds you of what he had done forty years before, when he took it upon himself to kill the Egyptian that was beating a Hebrew.
