Exodus 34:12-16
Excerpted from: One Nation Under God (Part 2)They were speaking of the adjacent lands around Israel and even the far-flung lands as well. Turn with me to Exodus 34:12. Wisely, Judah began with the family in their commitments to changing. They promised not to intermarry with the people of the adjacent Gentile lands. This was not racial snobbery or prejudice, since the Israelites have always contained some individuals of other races. This was an issue of religion and culture primarily; a different way of thinking.
This nation does the very opposite of what God said here by allowing Muslim’s to put up their mosques. Other religions to do the same thing. The Buddhists, the Shinto’s, and anyone else that wants to come to our country. Play the harlot with their gods means spiritual adultery. Moses recorded in Exodus what God told him to record and Israel was warned not to get involved with other nations in that way.
It was the danger of having the people led astray to the worship of pagan gods of the surrounding nations as a result of inter-marriages that made this commitment necessary. Israel was deluded, much like the United States and the Israelite countries around the world today are. In the church, we are not interested in race or anything like that because Paul said that there are Jews and Gentiles in the church. We do not see the difference because we are all spiritual Israelites. They have been baptized and received God’s Holy Spirit.
Exodus 34:14
Excerpted from: Deuteronomy and IdolatrySeven times in the Old Testament God refers to this characteristic of Himself. He is a jealous God; and in several places, He adds to it that He is a "consuming fire." I feel the reason He added that is so that there would be a magnification of the heat of the feeling He has about the relationship we have with Him. He is not going to share us with anybody.
When this heated, consuming, jealousy characteristic is applied to a man, it is very bad. Why is it very bad? Because human nature cannot control it. It leads to extreme self-centeredness. However, when it is applied to God, it becomes very good because He is good. That is His nature. He is good, and He is love personified. His passion is perfectly under control, and therefore it takes on entirely good characteristics that are for our benefit, and that benefit is that we take on an intensity that drives us to be faithful. It is part of fearing Him.
Jealousy describes a passionate intensity to protect or to defend something that is jeopardized, and God's zeal, or jealousy, is to protect His people, His nation, His church, or His honor; and in order to magnify that, the attribute is associated with consuming fire.

Excerpted from: Are You Envious or Content?Now “jealous,” here, is a close brother to the other two Hebrew words. It is Strong’s 7067 (remember the other two were ’s 7065 and 7068). It is “qanna” (kan-nah); it is an adjective, and means only “jealous.” It is used 6 times, each one as it relates to God.
One of God’s names is Jealous! This is absolutely a positive! It is His name, and it is one of His character traits. But it is very clear that His jealousy is on our behalf. It is a good thing. I would say that most of the time, when a human experiences jealousy, it is a negative. It can lead to sin. But God has offered us a relationship with Him, through His Son, and He jealously guards it. He will not abide the intrusion of another “lover,” so to speak.
Exodus 34:12-16
Excerpted from: Prayer and Seeking GodHere God is having a passionate reaction against a rival. That rival is idolatry. And God will not permit idolatry without reacting because idolatry promotes divided loyalties. We are His, and He does not choose to share us with anybody or anything else.
Do you see what is happening? Do you see the way God describes idolatry? He described it as being harlotry, playing around with somebody else's wife. It is a case of divided loyalties. God gets hot. He gets angry. He is jealous. In fact, as we saw there in Deuteronomy 4, He gets so hot that He describes Himself as being a consuming fire. Fire symbolizes God's radiant glory as an aspect of His holiness.

Excerpted from: Agape: Does Not EnvyAs we read here, and as Mike pointed out in his Feast message, one of God's names is Jealous. So we know that this is absolutely a very positive characteristic, or at least it can be.
Our God is a jealous God. But, and here is the big but, we rightly belong to God. All worship and service belong to Him alone and it is indeed sin to put anything before Him. So He has a right to be jealous. All our thoughts, right? We need a Pooh thinking cap here, thinking chair: all our thoughts belong to Him and God tells us He does not want to share us with this world or anything in it.

Because He wanted there to be no temptation to idolatry; no joining together of the way the people of the land worshipped their god with the way God wanted His people to worship Him. He did not want His way to be diluted by anything that was foreign to His purpose, to His plan. So He specifically designates that there is to be only one place.
