Luke 6:36
Excerpted from: Children of the LightWe are commanded then here by Jesus; that is like a command to be perfect even as God is perfect. Is not one of our doctrines moving on to perfection? But in Luke's version of the same thing in chapter 6, verse 36, Luke translates it this way. He says,
So the command to be perfect seems to me like it means to be merciful. If you want to be perfect, you certainly got to have compassion and mercy, do you not? Anyway, that is the way I see it; that is, we are perfect in God's eyes when we are compassionate and merciful to others.
Luke 6:36-37
Excerpted from: Mercy Triumphs Over Judgment! In verse 36, the word merciful means showing and having compassion. When verse 36 is read in context with verses 27 to 35, the word refers to gifts and deeds. For example, to be a doer of merciful deeds. Verse 36 linked with verse 37 implies kindness and forbearance in judgment. So merciful here includes being compassionate.
