47 And athat servant who bknew his master’s will, and did not prepare himself or do according to his will, shall be beaten with many stripes.  
48 aBut he who did not know, yet committed things deserving of stripes, shall be beaten with few. For everyone to whom much is given, from him much will be required; and to whom much has been committed, of him they will ask the more.

49 a“I came to send fire on the earth, and how I wish it were already kindled!  
50 But aI have a baptism to be baptized with, and how distressed I am till it is baccomplished!  
51 aDo you suppose that I came to give peace on earth? I tell you, not at all, bbut rather division.  
52 aFor from now on five in one house will be divided: three against two, and two against three.  
53 aFather will be divided against son and son against father, mother against daughter and daughter against mother, mother-in-law against her daughter-in-law and daughter-in-law against her mother-in-law.”

54 Then He also said to the multitudes, a“Whenever you see a cloud rising out of the west, immediately you say, ‘A shower is coming’; and so it is.  
55 And when you see the asouth wind blow, you say, ‘There will be hot weather’; and there is.

Luke 12:49-53

to send—cast.

fire—"the higher spiritual element of life which Jesus came to introduce into this earth (compare Matthew 3:11), with reference to its mighty effects in quickening all that is akin to it and destroying all that is opposed. To cause this element of life to take up its abode on earth, and wholly to pervade human hearts with its warmth, was the lofty destiny of the Redeemer" [OLSHAUSEN: so CALVIN, STIER, ALFORD, etc.].

what will I, etc.—an obscure expression, uttered under deep and half-smothered emotion. In its general import all are agreed; but the nearest to the precise meaning seems to be, "And what should I have to desire if it were once already kindled?" [BENGEL and BLOOMFIELD].
