10aThen He said to them, “Nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom.
11And there will be great aearthquakes in various places, and famines and pestilences; and there will be fearful sights and great signs from heaven.
12aBut before all these things, they will lay their hands on you and persecute you, delivering you up to the synagogues and bprisons. cYou will be brought before kings and rulers dfor My name’s sake.
13But ait will turn out for you as an occasion for testimony.
14aTherefore settle it in your hearts not to meditate beforehand on what you will1answer;
15for I will give you a mouth and wisdom awhich all your adversaries will not be able to contradict or1resist.
16aYou will be betrayed even by parents and brothers, relatives and friends; and they will put bsome of you to death.
17And ayou will be hated by all for My name’s sake.
20a“But when you see Jerusalem surrounded by armies, then know that its desolation is near.
21Then let those who are in Judea flee to the mountains, let those who are in the midst of her depart, and let not those who are in the country enter her.

It's obvious from verse 18 that he's not saying that these people will absolutely not die. Some of them indeed are going to die. When this is combined with Revelation 6:9-11, it shows that some—who were certainly not by any appearance at all Laodicean—are going to lose their lives as martyrs, as witnesses for God in the coming tribulation.
