John 1:26-30
John the Baptist makes it clear that, though he was a prophet, he was not the Prophet, but rather was sent as a preparer of the way for the One who was the Prophet. John the Baptist's ministry was "unto repentance." He came revealing to people their sins, something the prophets always did. What we have here is not so much his ministry as the unique position he was in, chosen by God to be the one who would introduce the Messiah to the Hebrew world.

What Does John 1:29 Mean?
John the Baptist, inspired by God's Spirit, speaks of his cousin Jesus after baptizing Him. The death of one sinless Man is capable, in God's eyes, of equalizing and making of no account all sins of all mankind throughout time. Sin is an infectious disease, internal yet spread from person to person, requiring quarantine that separates the defiled from the clean. Jesus is the cure, enabling the infected to leave quarantine and enter a relationship with God. God purposed long before the foundation of the world that sin, which kills, could only be paid for by the death of the sinner or a sinless substitute greater than all creation. Jesus came primarily as this sacrifice, the Lamb of God to save His people from their sins.
