For John had not yet been cast into prison (oupw gar hn beblhmenov eiv thn fulakhn Iwanhv). Periphrastic past perfect indicative of ballw explaining (gar) why John was still baptizing, the reason for the imprisonment having been given by Luke (Luke 3:19 f.).
