Knew that he had been a long time (gnouv oti polun hdh xronon exei). How Jesus "knew" (gnouv, second aorist active participle of ginwskw) we are not told, whether supernatural knowledge (John 2:24 f.) or observation or overhearing people's comments. In hdh exei we have a progressive present active indicative, "he has already been having much time" (xronon, accusative of extent of time).
Wouldest thou be made whole? (Qeleiv ugihv genesqai). "Dost thou wish to become whole?" Predicate nominative ugihv with genesqai (second aorist middle infinitive). It was a pertinent and sympathetic question.
